Westfest restoring the good old days
As August comes around it’s not far til Labor Day weekend. Hopefully the 100 degree days will be gone and we can look forward to another great time at Westfest.
The good folks at West have decided to restore the media party like they used to have. It’s planned for August 3rd at the West Fraternal Auditorium. I remember we had some great ones. About 500 us media and home folks crowd in for some good food and a sample of what we can look for at Westfest. Beer Barrel Polka was usually the song of choice.
We got an invitation from John Hurtick, President.
In his letter he paid tribute to some fallen leaders that helped build Westfest to what it is today. Like Vice president and “hands-on everything” C. W. Cernosek. associate directors Edwin Nors, Charles “Kutch” Kutcheroursky and Alfred “Freddy” Gerik. The letter says they will be truly missed.
On the team this year Robert Nors, Nita Gerik, Brian Muska, Daniela Ranzinger and David Dokupit. We used to do business with Tommy Muska for our advertising. Now Brian does this.
We’ll probably have a free ticket to give away if you renew or add a new subscription. Some years it has still been hot Labor Day weekend so Westfest added some water sprays. Still if you are having a good time, the heat doesn’t bother you.
The letter doesn’t say anything about Bob Lilly helping to promote the event. I remember in the early days Bob Lilly and George Andre had just acquired the Coors Beer franchise here. He and his team were there on the frontline signing autographs. They had just retired from the Dallas Cowboys.
Here’s hoping for the best year ever. There have been some changes downtown you might want to check on when you are there.
I do have some fond memories of driving Miss Waco in their huge parade each year, and all the folks watching us. The car dealers would “Loan” me a convertible for the weekend. I even got to show it off at church Sunday, with the top down. I was a big wheel those days.
Oh yes, Friday night’s party is still on. Knife Park and Johnny Lee are the bands. Miss Westfest is chosen. Katern Kolar is reigning queen. Brave Combo is one of the bands both days. Gary P. Nunn will be there Sunday only. The Cloggers from Waco usually perform both days. Look around and you might find Elvis there. There’s more than I can get in this column, so check out their web site:www.westfest.com
