Great time of the year
We pause at this time of the year for Good Friday and Easter. We suspect that our world is in better shape than it has been in years. Yes, we are still at war, and the economy hasn’t fully recovered. The government owes more than it should.
Seems more people are praying for better times. We still have people in poverty , while there are more non-profits, churches and individuals willing to help. Check it out yourself. Call 211.
As we write this even the weather is great — except the TV weathermen are worrying about lack of rain. 80 degrees in the day is great for me and did you see that full moon?
Easter we think about our churches. The phone book lists at least 83 churches. There’s a new one opening in Robinson on Newland Drive. It will be a Church of Christ. That will make it 28 for Robinson
Many churches have a sunrise service. I went to one at the Salvation Army’s Wm. Booth Garden Apartments when I was on the board. Major K was the major then. It was a cold morning, I think I was the only board member there.
We live in a great city. How many cities have a religious university like Baylor University? In Texas I can only think about SMU and TCU. How many cities have three places of high education?
How many cities have a lake in the city that is as big as the city itself? How many cities have a beautiful river thru the heart of town? How many cities have a triathlon and a beautiful 400 acre park to have it in? How many cities have so many great people? Too many to list.
Easter we tend to think about churches. First Baptist, Columbus Ave.,Seventh & James Street and Highland are the main Baptist ones in Waco.
First United Methodist seems to stand alone as the largest Methodist church in the area. Out of 36,000 Methodist churches in the U. S, first is in the top 100 in attendance. Their slogan is God is Big Enough. In case you didn’t know, the congregation was the first in Waco to start a church. Almost every church in Waco grew out of it. Check out the history marker on the banks of the Brazos where it started in 1850.
Happy Easter.
