It has been one of the best starts to a school year that Moody I.S.D. has ever had athletically in several years.  With the drop from 2-A to 1-A the expectations were raised and the student-athletes at Moody I.S.D. have jumped out to a great start in the Cross Country, Volleyball, and Football programs from the Junior High all the way to the High School level.

The Junior High Cross Country teams started out great with the Girls finishing 3rd in District 21-A and the Junior High Boys were District 21-A Champions.  Emily Bounds was a 3rd place Medalist for the girls and Sherielle Segura was an 8th place Medalist as well.  For the boys, Rakeem Wilson was a 3rd place Medalist, T.J. Riddell was a 7th place Medalist and Jacob Donaldson was an 8th place Medalist.  The Varsity Cross Country girls team finished 3rd in District 21-A with three Medalist (Melanie Kowalski – 4th, Leslie Stewart – 5th, and Dusty Meyer – 8th).  The boys Varsity team finished 2nd in District 21-A with three Medalist as well (Vincent Ratliff – 2nd, Kyle Dean – 4th, and Joshua Price – 7th).  Both the girls and boys Varsity teams advanced to the Regional meet with the girls finishing 16th overall as a team and the boys finishing 13th overall as a team.  Moody was the only team to have all 4 teams finish in the top 3 in District 21-A.

The Volleyball teams got off to a great start as well in District 16-A.  At the Junior High the 7th and 8th grade teams were both “Undefeated District 16-A Champions”.  The Junior Varsity Volleyball team at the High School was also District 16-A Champions and the Varsity Team finished undefeated in District 16-A and were District and Bi-District Champions.  The Varsity Volleyball team finished the year as Regional Quarterfinalist.  With all the success at the sub-varsity levels we look for great things to come in the future with our Volleyball team as well.

The Football teams at Moody I.S.D. got off to an awesome start as well.  The 7th and 8th Grade Football teams were both District 12-A Champions with the 7th Grade finishing the season with a mark of 5 – 3 and the 8th Grade with a record of 8 – 0 – 1.  The Junior Varsity Football team was also District 12-A Champions finishing undefeated in District play and with a season mark of 8 – 1.  The Varsity Football team made it to the State Playoffs for the first time since 1999 and only their 3rd appearance since 1990.  With all the success at the lower levels we look for great things to come in the football program here at Moody I.S.D.

The following letter was an e-mail sent to the Moody I.S.D. Superintendent, Ray Matthews, about the Bi-District Playoff Game between Pineland West Sabine & Moody from a West Sabine fan by the name of Susan Kilcrease:

Subject: football game

Mr. Matthews,

Congratulations to your football team and coaching staff on a great season. The reason I am writing this email is to let you know that I saw something on the field Friday night that was so positive that I had to share how it touched me and other West Sabine fans who were sitting around me. I hope I can speak for them. I was very touched by the good sportmanship your team displayed. Each time one of our players was down they reached out a hand to help them up. On several occasions when “our team” had a good play they would reach out and give them a pat on the back or a helmet pop. I know many times we teach our athletes that winning is everything. Friday night I saw that your athletes were taught more than winning. Not only did they play hard, they played with heart and good sportsmanship. Even though your team did not win the game. They won a lot of respect from the West Sabine fans. It is my hope that you will let the coaches and players know that they are winners in my book.

Sincerely,

Susan Kilcrease

It is always nice to get these kinds of e-mails from people that don’t have to write them but choose to do so because of the positive things that they see our student-athletes here at Moody take part in on the playing fields.  It really makes you feel good as a coach to know that some of the things you tell your student-athletes sink in and they put them to work on the playing field.  We not only want to make our student-athletes the best athlete they can be, but also the best person they can be as well.  A huge THANK YOU goes out to Susan Kilcrease from West Sabine for her kind words about the Moody Football Team!
