Tuff Man Qualifier #1 on Lake Waco

High water conditions due to recent flooding did not dampen the spirits of over 200 fishermen on Lake Waco Saturday as 109 teams attempted to qualify for the 11th Annual TuffMan Trail Bass Championship. Lake Waco had risen almost eight feet bringing large amounts of debris down river. The flood gates were open at the dam which was bringing the water level down, but the lake was still five feet above normal. Tournament officials had to move the headquarters from Airport Beach to Twin Bridges due to the high water.
The top 12 teams are now qualified to fish against 49 other teams for prize money of $10,000 at the championship on January 8, 2011 on Lake Belton. The weigh-in will be at the Bell County Exposition Center in Belton during the Central Texas Boat Show.

Altogether the fishermen caught 244 keepers (14 inches or longer) for a total weight of 538.9 pounds giving an average weight of 2.21 pounds and a team average of just over 2 fish. The largest largemouth was 7.77 pounds caught by David Bueche and Patrick Anderson. They caught a total of 3 fish weighing in at 10.6 pounds and finished in 13th place, just one out of qualifying. They won $642 for their efforts. Second largest fish was a 7.33 pounder caught by the team of Garrett Henning and Jeff Smith who caught a total of 5 fish for 13.79 pounds and they finished in eighth place and won $928. The tournament was won by the team of David Underwood and Denny Copeland with 5 fish totaling 20.04 pounds earning them $2,500. Second place went to Johnny Snyder and Denis Schmedthorst with 5 fish at 19.27 pounds earning $1,700. Third place was the team of Billy Freeman and Dennis Garner with 5 fish weighing 17.41 pounds winning them $1,500. A total of 11 places plus 2 big bass were paid to the participants.
