HOT Urban Gardening Coaltion prepares for National Day of Service in Community Gardens

WACO, TX – The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition invites the Greater Waco community to particpate in the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 16 from noon to 3 p.m. at one of 15 garden sites to grow gardens, eat a meal, and meet neighbors.

The UGC expects 30-50 volunteers to register at each site. Volunteers will receive a bagged lunch prepared by the Baylor University Campus Kitchen Project. Participants are asked to bring a pair of gardening gloves but tools are provided. Participants will be building garden beds, turning compost piles, and planting spring crops. In addition, a number of sites will also be hosting educational opportunities to learn about space-intensive growing and drip irrigation.

The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual MLK Day of Service, working with the King Center in Atlanta and thousands of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide.
