WACO, Texas – The Waco Independent School District will celebrate the opening of a brand new
$70 million school building at the site of the new University High campus on Sunday, August 14 at
3 p.m. The new school is located at the southwest corner of New Road and Old Robinson Road at
3201 South New Road in Waco.
The ceremony will begin in the school’s gymnasium at 3 p.m. with a pep-rally-style dedication
ceremony that will be followed by a “ribbon cutting” into the building where guests will be invited
for tours and refreshments afterwards.
The project began in 2009 with the design development phase of the 80-acre tract of land that now
houses a two-story steel structure consisting of 275,000 square feet of classroom space, an 850-seat
auditorium and 30,000 square feet of gymnasium space, including two auxiliary gymnasiums and a
competition gymnasium with fixed stadium seating. The project also includes outdoor athletic
practice and training facilities, and a day care facility for the Trojan Tykes program.
Funding for the new University High was made possible by Waco voters who approved a $172.5
million bond package in May 2008. The referendum also funded several other construction projects
in the district, including a new J.H. Hines Elementary and a new Dean Highland Elementary.
Construction on a new Bell’s Hill Elementary, also funded by the bond package, began earlier this
summer.

– The Waco Independent School District will celebrate the opening of a brand new
$12.9 million school building at the new Dean Highland Elementary School on Monday, August 15
at 6 p.m.
The school is located at the site of the former Dean Highland Elementary School, with a new street
address of 3300 Maple Avenue in Waco. The ceremony will begin in the school’s cafeteria at 6
p.m., followed by a “ribbon cutting” into the building where guests will be invited for tours and
refreshments afterwards.
With the exception of the gymnasium, and the newest classroom wing, the former Dean Highland
Elementary building, which dated back to 1917, was demolished last summer to make room for the
new state-of-the-art campus in North Waco.
