Student Robot Designers to Compete
WACO, Texas – On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Heart of Texas BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science,
and Technology) will match 26 schools, including two Waco ISD high schools, against one another
in a head-to-head robotics competition that will test the students’ creativity, ingenuity, designing
and math skills. The competition will be held on the campus of University High, located at 3201
South New Road in Waco from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Student teams from A.J. Moore Academy and University High will compete against 24 other
Central Texas high schools as they each try to advance to the Texas BEST Regional Robotics
Championship. The winning team will advance to the championship on Nov.18 and 19 at the
University of North Texas at Dallas.
Heart of Texas BEST is a yearly engineering contest designed to inspire students towards further
studies in the fields of science and engineering. Starting with a box of raw materials, teams of high
school students are given six weeks to design, build, and demonstrate a remote-controlled machine
that will perform a given task.
Engineers and scientists from local industry have teamed with the students as technology coaches,
mentoring and guiding the students in understanding the engineering process, teaming,
brainstorming and other business principles. On contest day, the teams will pit their machines in a
head-to-head sports-like competition to see which is BEST.
Heart of Texas BEST is one of over 20 hubs throughout Texas and the U.S., and covers the Central
Texas region, including Waco, Temple and Killeen, as well as their surrounding areas. BEST
Robotics, Inc. (BRI) is the non-profit corporation created to oversee implementation of the BEST
concept.
