“I remember Clint Eastwood in Waco”
Clint Eastwood was the surprise speaker at the Republican National
Convention.
I still remember when he came to Waco promoting his movie “For a Few Dollars
More.”
This was back when the studios sent out their stars to promote a movie.
Guess TV wasn’t so important as people think it is today.
Claude Stewart was manager of the Waco Theatre. ABC Interstate owned the
theatre. (Along with the 25th street Theatre, where Buster Scott was
manager).
I was putting on beauty pageants then. And what better place to have one
where everyone was used to coming for great entertainment.
Anyway Mr. Stewart went against his company and stopped the movie for an
hour so I could hold my pageant. He let me build a runway for the girls on
stage.
I guess we knew Clint Eastwood would be coming to town. so we tied both
events together.
We had some of the entries line up with Clint on stage. He loved it. I wish
I could find that picture out of the million or so pictures I have taken.
We’ll bet that was a record week for the theatre in attendance.
Ann Margaret came to Waco on a similar promotion for her movie. Joe Lewis
had a shoe store across the street. He gave her a pair of cowboy boots.
That’s another picture I wish I could find. I thought at the time what a
funny way to spell someone’s name. I suppose that was another pageant year.
We could fill this whole newspaper talking about our beauty pageant years.
Some of the young ladies were amazing. A few are now stars in show business
themselves..
New year approaching
Now that we have candidates selected for the Democrats and the Republicans
let hope America comes out the winner.
The decision of who will lead America is now up to you and me.
Last week and this week more of the press coverage is about Republicans
because that’s what we have seen the most coverage. Both candidates talk
about jobs. Since we are not fighting a war for the first time in a years,
we look forward to the future with optimism. I do believe we are doing
better than in years past. Many new businesses are opening up, and more are
hiring. Take Space X and L3 in McGregor we read there are 6,000 jobs in that
city of 5000 population. That’s positive news if we have ever seen any.
Now the ball is in our court on who we vote for as our next president to
lead this great nation.
