The Harlem Globetrotters have contributed more innovations to the game of basketball than any other team in history. They helped popularize things like the behind the back pass, the fast break, and the alley-oop. In celebration of their 85th consecutive season of touring the world, the Trotters have now implemented the first-ever 4-point shot as part of all of its games on the team’s 2011 “4 Times the Fun” North American tour.
“It could revolutionize the game of basketball forever,” says Globetrotters ball handling sensation Blenda Rodriguez, in his fourth season with the team. “Players these days are bigger, stronger and faster, but the court remains the same size, so the 4-point shot can help open things up. It also gives the team that is behind the chance to cut into a deficit quickly.”
The team often behind is the Globetrotters’ traveling opponent, the Washington Generals, who have not defeated the Globetrotters since 1971.
Throughout the 2011 North American tour, which will travel to 220 cities in 46 U.S. States and six Canadian provinces through April 17, every Globetrotters game will now feature two designated 4-point shooting spots on each side of midcourt, each located 35 feet from the basket (the spots are 12 feet beyond the NBA’s official 3-point line).
This game-changing innovation will be on display when the Globetrotters and Generals battle at the Ferrell Center at Baylor University on Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets, starting at $22.00 are on sale at www.harlemglobetrotters.com, the Ferrell Center box office, baylorbears.com or by phone 254-710-1000.
