Love Is In The Air At Stoney Brook of Hewitt
Hewitt, Texas (February 2012) < Valentine¹s Day is a fondly anticipated
holiday and a wonderful time to share some of life¹s greatest love stories
by those who have loved the longest. And where better to find true love
than
at Stoney Brook of Hewitt, a local senior living community. At Stoney
Brook, love is in the air during this romantic time of year with an
example
that true love knows no bounds nor the boundary of time.
³For decades many of our couples have experienced all that life has to
give-
the ups and downs but through it all they are sharing life together,² says
Chelsey Haeffner, Community Marketing Director. ³And each of these
couples
have stories that warm the heart, and make you believe in the power of
love.²
Shirley and Charles met during their high school years in Brownwood,
Texas,
in the mid-1940s. Charles and Shirley were neighbors during their teenage
years and Shirley recalls hearing Charles loudly playing his trumpet
before
even seeing him for the first time. Charles and Shirley would ride around
the small town on his Cushman motor-scooter ³just as friends,² says
Shirley.
She may not have been interested in him during that time, but Charles says
he was smitten by Shirley ³from the first time I saw her.²
After much persistence by Charles, the couple went on a double date with
their best friends in 1946. On August 28, 1948, when Shirley was just 17
years old and Charles was 18, they were married. During the first few
years
of the marriage, Charles and Shirley moved from Texas, to Oklahoma, to
Arkansas, to Louisiana, and back to Texas as a result of Charles¹ job with
a
telephone company. Shirley credits the strength and endurance of their
marriage to these moves stating, ³We left home and had to depend on one
another.²
The couple¹s love continues to this day. Shirley and Charles were blessed
with 2 daughters, Karen and Leann, and now have 5 grandchildren and 1
great-granddaughter.
When asked the secret to their long and successful marriage, Charles
pointed
at his wife and replied, ³Minding her.² Shirley laughed, and quickly
responded, ³That¹s not true!² —–Laughter has certainly been a constant
in this love story.
Charles and Shirley haven¹t lost their taste for a good time either. The
couple can often be spotted in the activity room at Stoney Brook, laughing
as they play a lively game of balloon volleyball.
³Shirley and Charles are still social butterflies,² says Missi Dayringer,
Executive Director of Stoney Brook of Hewitt. ³The two of them are in a
real partnership. It just shows you that true love can last forever.²
