Some of the topics covered are: the Organization and Operation of the Department, How the Patrol Division Operates, The Function and Duties of Detectives, Criminal and Traffic Laws and Enforcement Procedures, Communications Division and 9-1-1, and Firearms, Police Training, Crime Prevention and much more. While most of the Academy is instructed by members of the Hewitt Police Department guest speakers from various Law Enforcement Agencies are invited to speak each year.
The purpose of the Citizen’s Police Academy is really two-fold. It is designed to give interested citizens the opportunity to learn first-hand how their police department operates, and, also, for the department to obtain input and suggestions, from the citizens it serves, on how to improve the quality of services offered.
Students are given the opportunity to ride with Hewitt Police on patrol if they desire and there will be a class photograph, graduation ceremonies, diplomas and other awards for the students.
Citizens Police Academies in Hewitt are held once a year. Requirements include being at least 18 years old, a resident of Hewitt or an employee of a business located in Hewitt, and having no criminal record. Interested persons may obtain an application at the Hewitt Police Department, 204 Chama Drive, Hewitt, Texas, 76643. There will be no cost for attending.
