Our challenge to you — our readers

Ever wonder why we let Iowa, New Hampshire and other states
decide who will be our next president? Looks like it will be
decided even before Texans get to vote. Now with Perry in the race, if we
get to
vote we could get a lot of votes here that could decide the final
candidate.

How could we ever have gotten into a mess like this happening for
redistricting we have now. The election office can’t go ahead and send out
new voter certificates or print ballots until all this mess is settled. Even
candidates are confessed too, about what territories they will be running
in.
As we look ahead to this new year we pledge to do a better job of giving
you, our readers, more information that you can use. Like information
relevant to you everyday. Right now a hot subject is taxes and what you can
do to smooth this process, as we approach April 15 — only this year you get
two more days to get your income tax in. The 15th is a Sunday so the
government has given us Monday as a tax holiday too.
When the health issues are changing regularly we pledge to try to help you
keep up with these changes. Same with your Medicare information. This is no
easy task.

A hot issue is where to spend your entertainment dollars. What church may be
the best for you? What church is expanding. What churches are in trouble.
TV is changing rapidly, so this will be hard for us to suggest what shows
you would like. This is a personal decision. I’m glad to see Dallas
returning. With Grande and other cable providers we have a greater variety
than ever.

Another challenge is what restaurant is best for you. This is an impossible
task since your desires may be different even in your own family. All we can
do here is suggest what food is healthy for you and what is bad for you. How
do we know? We depend on loyal readers and consultants that send us their
stories. One great option all of us have here in Central Texas are the many
exciting places where you can dine in or dine out. These are changing
weekly. We are announcing a new barbecue place in Robinson, We can offer our
first hand experience with the barbecued ribs we enjoyed. Denny’s on
Interstate 35 was going to give us a try for a month, and now it
has been over a year their ad has been on the front page. With your order of
$20 you can get a $5 discount by using the coupon on our front page. One
great thing you may be interested in: The restaurant is open 24 hours a day.
Their menu starts with $2 items. .

We don’t like to run the daily police stories. They are depressing. We want
to run good news. News that we feel affects your life. News you can use.

If you read our columns you will notice we publish a lot of official legal
notices. They may be dull reading, but you should pay attention to them,
because they affect your life.

Baylor is breaking records so fast in their many sports we can’t keep up
with them. We can only join in the rush to print the latest news. This is
the best news Waco and Baylor has ever had. Now people across the globe can
think about Waco as a sports center and no longer the home of the Branch
Dravidians. We’re bringing in a Globetrotter January 20. We invite you to
come by and meet him. 26th and Cole. Get an autograph and if you’re lucky
we can get your picture with him. See if you can dribble like he does. They
play at Ferrell January 27th.

We have been offering you Hints from Heloise for a few years now. The
Tribune saw how popular she is, and now they want in on her informative
columns.
We have been running our Wild Birds Unlimited column offering you tips on
attracting and offer free food for them for six months. We tried this for a
year and found it interesting to watch as one bird tells others to come to
the Foster house and get free food.

La Trelle Simons writes Everlasting Father, our religious column. We have
many readers tell us they like her columns. One of our best services we
offer is our
letters to the editor. Anyone can write us a letter about what’s on their
mind. Freedom of the press we call it.

Don’t forget our great advertisers who help us keep the paper going. Now we
can offer beautiful color ads. Outside the Tribune we are the only general
circulation newspaper in the county to offer this service. Please read these
ads and thank the advertisers who are placing them with us.

We thank all our advertisers and you: our readers who help us keep freedom
of the press alive in Waco as we start our 67th year. For the Suburban
Courier this is our 121st year.
