Good experience on I-35

By: Bill Foster
Bill Foster Most of us dread the thought of having to drive on Interstate 35 at any time... day or night. Let me tell you about a good experience I had last Sunday. First the worst. I was going to my sisters in Fort Worth Friday night. Missed the cut off on Int. 30 west. But the trip through downtown to get back to 30 was interesting. Lots of new buildings downtown.

We we going to Grapefest the next day. My sister pulled down a Google map so between us we made it to Grapevine OK. Lots of people had the same idea. but the historic town knows how to handle crowds. They have shuttle buses to pick you up next to the many parking spots around that part of the town. They take you to the gate. Then we lucked out and caught a golf cart to the theatre where our meeting was. There were thousands of people enjoying the event.

On the way back we got lost and ended up going through Denton county even through we had the map. Still downtown Ft Worth looks exiting any time. They were having a car show so some side streets were blocked. Anyway, back to my story about Int. 35. I left Ft. Worth Sunday morning at 8 so I could make Sunday school at 9:30. The sun was coming out but the night frost was on my windows. So after cleaning the back window I started looking for WACO signs. If you haven’t been there in a while they have a new highways to get to Interstate 35. I just kept following the WACO signs. After I got on the main highway I set my cruise control on 68 and let her rip. Sometimes I would have to hit the slow control, but I never turned it off.

I thought for sure I would have to when I hit Hillsboro, but I can finally the highway was finished there and I sailed through Hillsboro without slowing down. All along the route I was happy to see the WACO signs. Finally Behrens Circle came up and then Waco Drive. That was the first time I had to get off cruise control. I only caught one red light on Waco drive. The city has got the lights timed right now,so I made it home by 9 a. m. some 83 miles from Ft. Worth. (Yes I made SS by 9:30.) That’s probably the first time I enjoyed traveling on Int. 35 in many a year. Thanks Richard Spopik and all your crews at the Waco District Texas Highway Department for making this possible.
P. S. As I write this I hear about a six vehicle crash on Int. 35 that killed three near Troy.
