CLASS 4-A: Darrell Harris, Sr., Running Back/Kick Returner/Defensive Back, Waco:

“Believe it or not,” says Waco High coach Danny Ramsey, “Darrell Harris sometimes makes things tougher on our defense!” The Lions’ explosive do-everything back frequently leads such quick scoring drives that the Waco defense spends too much time on the field. In the 52-35 Week 0 win over Austin, the 5-10, 185-pound raced for an astounding 338 yards on only 22 carries and scored six TDs, the longest of which came from 70 yards out. He also caught a pass for 47 yards, returned a punt for 41, and brought back six kickoffs for 116, including a key 51-yarder late in the game.

A basketball player and stick-out track athlete, Harris owns a superb 3.43 GPA and helps motivate youngsters through the Lions’ Reading Cubs program. Players work one-on-one with elementary school youngster and even write letters to their Cubs to motivate them throughout the year. He should be playing in some I-A program’s large stadium next fall.

“Darrell is the essence of a team player,” says Coach Danny Ramsey. “He works hard in practice, setting a great example for his teammates. In games, he rarely takes a play off. He takes it as a challenge. He’s just a great explosive player on both sides of the ball.”

DETAILS: Students recognized by Ford, the Texas Ford dealers and the Built Ford Tough Texas Football Media Advisory Board as the Built Ford Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week have excelled in three categories:
