Two Baylor Seniors Are First Baylor Students Inducted into National Japanese Honor Society
Two Baylor University students are the first Baylor inductees into the Japanese Honor Society College Chapter, which recognizes scholastic achievement and excellence in the study of Japanese.
The students are seniors Katherine Farley of China Spring and Rachel McCutchen of Houston. They received certificates and red-and-white cords they will wear at graduation.
Farley is majoring in English with a minor in Asian studies. McCutchen is majoring in professional writing with a minor in Asian studies.
The Japanese National Honor Society College Chapter was established in 2008 by the Association of Teachers of Japanese. Academic criteria for student members are completion of five semesters of Japanese language study, a GPA of 3.5 in Japanese language courses and an overall GPA of 3.0.
“Both of them have been exceptional in my Japanese courses and helped maintain high standards for the students of the Japanese language,” said Yuko Prefume, a lecturer in Japanese in the department of modern foreign languages, College of Arts and Sciences, at Baylor.
“They both participated in the exchange program in Japan,” she said. “Rachel won the Dallas Regional Japanese Speech Contest last year, and Katherine is applying to several graduate schools to further study Japanese language and literature. I cannot be more proud of their accomplishments.”
